Loneliness

Do you feel alone, even when you're surrounded by other people?

Loneliness is something many people experience at different points in life, yet it can be one of the hardest feelings to talk about. It isn't simply about being alone. You can have a busy social life, a partner, a family or colleagues around you every day and still feel deeply lonely. At its heart, loneliness is about feeling disconnected, unseen or as though no one truly understands what you're going through.

You may find yourself craving closer relationships but struggling to make them, or perhaps you have relationships in your life that leave you feeling emotionally distant rather than genuinely connected. You might hesitate to reach out to others because you worry about being a burden, fear rejection or feel that nobody would really understand. Over time, loneliness can become a painful cycle, making it harder to connect with others just when you need connection the most.

Living with loneliness can affect every part of your wellbeing. It can leave you feeling sad, anxious or emotionally drained, and may gradually reduce your confidence and sense of belonging. You might begin to withdraw from social situations, lose interest in activities you once enjoyed or convince yourself that other people don't really want your company. The longer loneliness continues, the easier it can become to believe that things will never change.

Many people who experience loneliness are kind, thoughtful and deeply caring individuals. Sometimes loneliness develops after a significant life change, such as moving to a new area, becoming a parent, the end of a relationship, retirement or the loss of someone important. For others, it stems from feeling misunderstood, struggling with anxiety or low self-esteem, or finding it difficult to let people see their true selves. Whatever the reason, loneliness is not a reflection of your worth or your ability to build meaningful relationships.

The good news is that loneliness is not something you have to face alone. Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to explore what may be contributing to your sense of disconnection and to better understand the patterns that may be making it difficult to form or maintain close relationships. As your confidence grows and your understanding deepens, many people find it becomes easier to connect with others in more genuine and fulfilling ways.

Together, we can explore the experiences that have shaped your relationships, help you overcome the barriers that keep you feeling isolated and support you in building stronger connections with both yourself and the people around you. Feeling understood is often the first step towards feeling less alone.
